Three police officers perished and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the residence near the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and a third person who fled following the blast was apprehended soon after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location displayed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, explained the farmhouse was subject to an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the three owners.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the blast consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.

The official thought the explosion had occurred on a floor above the doorway and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being activated”.

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed local news, adding that the family members had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.
