The network's Leading New Show of 2025 Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this charming family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
